Judge Richard Gergel

South Carolina District Court

Richard Mark Gergel is a United States District Judge in the District of South Carolina.  He is a graduate of Duke University and the Duke University School of Law.  Judge Gergel practiced law in Columbia, South Carolina for 30 years before his nomination to the District Court bench by President Barak Obama in 2010.  He presides in Charleston, South Carolina.  Judge Gergel is the author of numerous works on American legal and civil rights history, including his 2019 book Unexampled Courage:  The Blinding of Sgt. Isaac Woodard and the Awakening of President Harry Truman and Judge Waties Waring.
