Judge Myron Thompson

Middle District of Alabama


With his appointment on September 29, 1980, Judge Thompson became the second (Judge U.W. Clemon being the first having been appointed by President Carter in January 1980 and confirmed in June 1980) African-American appointed to the United States District Court for the Middle District of Alabama. He was appointed by President Carter. Judge Thompson became Chief Judge of the Court in February 1991 and served in that capacity until 1998.   A native of Alabama, Myron H. Thompson received his undergraduate and law degree from Yale. After graduating from Yale Law School, Thompson returned to Alabama, beginning his professional career as Assistant Attorney General. He was the first African-American Assistant Attorney General in Alabama's history.   In 1974, Thompson entered the private practice of law, becoming a Partner in 1979 at the law firm of Thompson & Faulk. Prior to assuming the federal bench, Thompson had served as a municipal judge, performed public service legal work, and had a varied practice in criminal and civil law.
