J. Scott Vowell

10th Judicial Circuit


Judge Vowell received his B.S. in Pre-Law from Auburn University and his J.D. from the Law School of the University of Virginia. Since 2003, he has been the Presiding Judge of the 10th Judicial Circuit of Alabama; since 1995, he has also been a Circuit Judge, Civil Division. Prior to that, he was in private practice.

 

Judge Vowell is a member of the American Bar Association; Alabama State Bar Association; Birmingham Bar Association; American Judicature Society; Alabama Pattern Jury Instruction Committee, Civil; the Executive Committee, Alabama Circuit Judges Association; American Law Institute; and the Executive Committee National Conference of State Trial Judges. He is also the President of the Inns of Court, Birmingham Inns; Chairman of the Judicial Education Committee; and a Fellow of the Alabama Law Foundation.

 

He has served on the Executive Committee of the Birmingham Bar Association; Past President and Director of the Birmingham Legal Aid Society; President of the Young Lawyers Section, Birmingham Bar Association; Judge of the Alabama Court of the Judiciary; and Library Manager of the Jefferson County Law Library. He continues to serve as the Honorary Chairman of the Birmingham Annual Bench/Bar Retreat. He also received the Alabama State Bar Judicial Award of Merit in 2005.

 

In addition, Judge Vowell has served on various civic organizations in Birmingham, such as the Rotary Club, Metro YMCA, Boy Scouts of America, and as Director of the Greater Alabama Council.
