Chief Judge Emily Marks

US District Court - Middle District of Alabama


Judge Emily C. Marks is the Chief United States District Judge for the Middle District of Alabama. After being nominated by President Donald J. Trump, she joined the Court in in August 2018.  She became Chief District Judge on February 1, 2019.  Judge Marks graduated from Spring Hill College in 1995, earning her Bachelor of Arts degree with a magna cum laude distinction, and where she was a President’s Scholar for English and for Foreign Languages. She is a 1998 graduate of The University of Alabama School of Law where she served as Chair of the John A. Campbell Moot Court Board, was a member of the Bench and Bar Legal Honor Society, and served as Associate Editor of the Law & Psychology Review.  Judge Marks practiced law in Montgomery, Alabama for 20 years, specializing in labor and employment law, civil rights litigation, and appellate practice. Judge Marks is a Fellow in the Alabama Law Foundation and formerly served as President of the Montgomery Chapter of the Federal Bar Association and as Chair of the Volunteer Lawyers Program for the Alabama State Bar.
