Erin Atkins is a 2003 graduate from the University of Alabama in Huntsville where she received a B.A. in English. She began her professional career teaching Honors English to recalcitrant teenagers at Grissom High School in Huntsville, Alabama.After three years, she decided criminal defendants would be easier to manage and switched careers. She is an alumna of the Birmingham School of Law and owner of The Atkins Firm, a small law firm focused on criminal defense and appellate law. Ms. Atkins has written over 50 appellate documents and sentencing memoranda in both state and federal courts. Her most recent appellate victories include two conviction reversals by the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals in 2016 (Woods v. State and Greene v. State) and a reversal of a probationary sentence in L.S. v. A.S. in 2018. She is a member of several professional organizations including the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Alabama Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, where she serves as the executive chair of The Guardian, the organization’s quarterly publication. She was also recently elected by her peers to serve as treasurer for the Young Lawyers Section of the Huntsville-Madison County Bar Association. She lives in Huntsville with her husband, two kids, and an obese cat, and she ardently defends the Oxford comma.
