This seminar is the Professionalism seminar required by the Alabama State Bar Rule 9 for all newly admitted attorneys in Alabama.

Judge Roman Shaul's Profile

Judge Roman Shaul Related Seminars and Products


Judge Shaul has co-authored a number of papers and seminar topics concerning Predatory Lending and the Fair Labor Standards Act. He often speaks at Continuing Legal Education seminars on both topics. He has won several important appellate victories for consumers over their fight to stay out of arbitration.  Judge Shaul is very active in the Young Lawyers Division of the Alabama State Bar and is currently serving as President of that organization. He has represented the State of Alabama at several National Bar Association Conferences. Judge Shaul is also a recent graduate of the Alabama State Bar Leadership Forum. Judge Shaul is involved with a number of civic and charitable organizations. He presently serves on the Board of Directors for the Alabama Appleseed Foundation, a non-partisan, multi-issue advocacy organization that seeks to identify root causes of injustice and inequality. The organization seeks to craft practical and lasting solutions through legal advocacy, community involvement and policy expertise. Judge Shaul is also co-chair of the Alabama State Bar's "Wills for Heroes" program, offers free wills to first responders, i.e., police, sheriff, fireman and emergency medical personnel.

Jeremy is Director of the Alabama Lawyer Assistance Program through the State Bar. He has been in the field of mental health for over 20 years. He has a passion is working with individuals and families that have been affected by addiction and mental health problems. He has Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from UAB and his Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Alabama. He currently lives in Hoover, AL with his wife and their 4 children.


Kevin L. Butler's Profile

A graduate of Cornell University, Butler received his law degree from Arizona State University.  Before coming to Birmingham, he was in the Federal Public Defender’s office in the Middle District, based in Montgomery.  During his last eight years in Montgomery, her served as the Chief Assistant Federal Public Defender.  Butler also served as an Assistant Federal Public Defender in the Eastern District of California and in the District of Nevada.  In 2012 he was appointed as the first federal public defender for the Northern District.

Kendall handles product liability, general personal injury and workers’ compensation cases involving defective industrial machinery as a member of Beasley Allen Law Firm’s Personal Injury and Product Liability Section. He has worked on numerous cases to compensate clients for their losses and influence corporations to design and manufacture safer products.  


Gaynor St. John's Profile

Gaynor St. John has been a partner at St. John and St. John for over 33 years.  Gaynor’s practice has been devoted to civil litigation to include healthcare litigation, professional medical liability and business litigation. In her 35 years of practice. She has tried in excess 70 civil cases to a jury verdict in North Alabama.

Honored by her peers for her litigation skills, Gaynor has been inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, an organization which elects as its Fellows no more than one percent of the practicing bar in any state and attorneys with preeminent trial skills. Gaynor is the past chair of the Alabama committee of the American College of Trial Lawyers. She has also been inducted as an Associate of the American Board of Trial Advocates. She is a frequent lecturer on trial skills and trial preparation.    Gaynor is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Denison University with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. She received her law degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1987.

Gaynor St. John has expanded her dispute resolution work and recently became affiliated with Schreiber ADR.


Brian McCarthy's Profile

Brian McCarthy Related Seminars and Products


Brian is an experienced trial lawyer, having tried cases to jury verdict or judgment throughout the State of Alabama. He also has successfully litigated cases in Florida, Mississippi and Texas. Brian has significant experience in admiralty and maritime, products liability, railroad, wrongful death, personal injury, commercial litigation, professional malpractice, aviation, and labor and employment. He also has successfully defended clients in cases involving mass-torts, multi-district litigation, and other complex litigation. Brian is a Fellow of the two premier trial lawyer associations in America, the American College of Trial Lawyers, an invitation-only group limited to 1 percent of the lawyers licensed to practice in the United States and Canada, and the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, an invitation-only body of 500 trial lawyers from the United States and 30 different countries.
