Description

This seminar will cover noteworthy legislation that passed during the 2023 Legislative Session. During this session, there were 712 general bills, 149 local bills, and 15 proposed constitutional amendments introduced, for a total of 876 bills. At the end of the session, there were 397 total bills that were enacted, including 275 general bills, 118 local bills, and 4 proposed constitutional amendments. Given the volume of acts adopted, this article will only highlight select bills most likely to be encountered by practitioners around this state. Practice areas highlighted here include Alcoholic Beverages, Businesses and Financial Institutions, Crimes and Offenses, Criminal Law and Procedure, Courts, Economic Development, Education, Environment and Natural Resources, Family Law, Health, Motor Vehicles, State Government, and Taxation.

Gillian Purser is a legislative attorney at the Legislative Services Agency for the State of Alabama. She earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern Mississippi and her law degree from the University of Alabama School of Law, where she was selected for membership in the Order of the Barristers. While at UA Law, she worked in the Domestic Violence Law Clinic to provide legal services to victims of domestic abuse in Tuscaloosa County and clerked for U.S. District Judge Keith Starrett in the Southern District of Mississippi. She has been at LSA for two years and works primarily in the areas of family law and education.
