Compliance Plan Update (2024)
Original Program Date :
Length: 54:56

Businesses involved in the health care industry should review their compliance programs. Both the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Office of the Inspector General (OIG) recently signaled a renewed focus on enforcing compliance sanctions, and the effectiveness of a company’s compliance program could make a major difference during investigations.  This seminar will focus on what's on the horizon for compliance enforcement.

Walt Green, Phelps Dunbar LLP

Walt Green focuses his practice on cybersecurity, white collar criminal defense and governmental investigations, and litigation. Walt served as the United States Attorney for the Middle District of Louisiana and the Executive Director for the National Center for Disaster Fraud from 2013-2017. He retired from the United States Department of Justice with over 20 years of federal experience. Walt also served in the United States Marine Corps for over 30 years, retiring with the rank of Colonel.  In addition to defending businesses against cyber class actions in multiple jurisdictions, Walt routinely provides real-time counseling for companies to respond to data breaches and cyber intrusions of their computer systems, including incidents across multiple states. He guides companies through cyberattacks, including C-suite counseling, coordinating forensic efforts, liaising with local and federal law enforcement agencies, and providing domestic and international notification advice.

Walt also advises domestic companies on compliance with U.S. data privacy laws, including the California Privacy Rights Act and other states’ data regulations. He helps multinational companies stay on top of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation and China’s Personal Information Protection Law.  In addition to his cybersecurity practice, Walt defends doctors, nurses, health care systems and health care executives in civil and criminal health care investigations.

Thomas Sullivan, Phelps Dunbar LLP

For over 30 years, Tom Sullivan has represented clients in almost every aspect of the health care industry, from hospitals and nursing facilities to physicians and surgeons, suppliers, consultants and vendors. His early career experience as a contract litigator taught him not only how to try a case but also how to identify potential issues when drafting documents and address them before they result in contract provisions that produce future litigation. He applies this linear and pragmatic approach when drafting business contracts and transaction documents and advising his clients in the health care field.

Working in the health care field also means being available to assist clients at any time—an approach that has often helped prevent transactions from failing. Tom makes it a point to be available for clients when needed, whenever and whatever the circumstances.
